Red Tower: Seljuk heritage by Alanya Harbour
An octagonal tower protecting the harbour
The Red Tower was built to protect the harbour, shipyard and castle from attacks by sea. Its inscription dates construction to 1226 and identifies the master builder as Ebu Ali Reha el Kettani from Aleppo. Dressed stone on the lower walls and red brick above give the tower its distinctive appearance. Within the octagonal exterior are vaulted passages and a substantial central support. Five levels, from the ground floor through intermediate floors to the open terrace, reveal the different functions of the defensive structure. The cistern, ventilation openings and arrow slits make the interior as interesting to explore as the exterior.
Before you visit
Plan for high stone steps and narrow passages inside the tower. Check Alanya Municipality’s official channels for current opening hours, admission conditions and exhibition arrangements.
